Types of Facial Wrinkles
AALC’s brief guide to facial wrinkles by definition and some of the best treatments for them.
Here at AALC we constantly scour the globe looking for the most cutting-edge techniques and treatments to combat the signs of aging. One of the most visible and sometimes difficult signs of aging are facial wrinkles. Here’s a quick breakdown of the many types of facial wrinkles and some of the best and most popular options to combat them in the battle to stay looking youthful and refreshed.
Atrophic Wrinkles (Forehead Wrinkles)
These undesirable lines appear as wrinkles upon a furrowed brow. They appear as the skin ages and as the tissue structure within the skin diminishes. Atrophic wrinkles occur as the result of various causes like aging or even the overuse of steroid cream. These wrinkles arise as collagen reduces in the skin with age and as skin thins as with age. Considered a more difficult wrinkle to treat, the appearance of atrophic wrinkles can be improved with a proper regimen of daily skincare focused on hydration. Laser treatments are also an excellent option to help encourage the skin to rebuild too.

Compression Wrinkles (Sleep Wrinkles)
Compression wrinkles on the face are caused by pressing your face against a pillow for long periods of time, such as when you sleep. To prevent these wrinkles, it is recommended to sleep on your back and chose a pillow designed to minimize pressure on the face while sleeping. Proper sleep posture and habits can help stave of these unwanted wrinkles and if you do get them, AALC is always ready to help treat them so you are looking your best at every age.

Gravitational Wrinkles
As the old saying goes, “you can’t fight gravity.” That may be true, but there sure is a lot you can do to combat it when it comes to facial wrinkles—injectables, laser treatments, a healthy lifestyle (good eating and habits), and proper skin care regimen! Gravitational wrinkles are the result of sagging skin that occurs as skin loses elasticity and collagen decreases – all an inevitable part of aging.
Gravitational wrinkles develop overtime as skin ages and as a result of gravity. With age, skin tissues naturally start to deflate due to a decline in collagen and skin elasticity, and then gravitational wrinkles appear as skin sags. These wrinkles are primarily the result of aging facial tissue deflating and are an excellent target for cosmetic fillers designed to plump sagging skin.

Elastotic Wrinkles
Primarily caused by sun exposure and damage, elastotic wrinkles appear as crease lines on the face, around the upper lip, on cheeks, and down to the base of the beck. Overtime, the elastic structure within the skin becomes damaged as your exposure to sun accumulates and you age, these wrinkles become more permanent. The best prevention for these wrinkles is a large ounce of prevention, including regular application of a good sunscreen and by shielding your skin from excessive sun exposure (wear a hat, cover your skin, and sit under an umbrella whenever possible). Further, avoiding cigarettes is essential too! Treatments for elastotic wrinkles include Fraxel fractional laser treatments, daily skincare regimens that include sunblock and a healthy lifestyle and habits.

Expression Wrinkles
To put it simply, expression wrinkles are caused by repeated facial expressions over time, expression wrinkles appear around the mouth (smile lines, frown lines) and at the corners of the eyes (crows feet wrinkles). The more expressive you are, the more likely you will earn these lines of expression as you age. While it’s impossible to go through life expressionless (and who would want to), these wrinkle lines can be easily treated with some simple in office treatments. Dysport and Botox are two popular injectables used to soft these lines and help diminishing them over time by “resting” the facial muscles that are the culprits behind these expression wrinkles.
